Profession:Economic Development and Planning Director
Economic Development and Planning Director, County of Tulare (2008current)
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance, Real Estate and Law (FRL) (1997)

Michael Washam is the Economic Development and Planning Director for the County of Tulare. Prior to accepting the position with the County, he worked as a guest teacher in Kings County. He formerly owned and operated Premier Impressions, a commercial printing company. Michael was Class Valedictorian when he earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in Finance, Real Estate and Law, from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona. Michael and his wife Johanna Washam, recently celebrated their 19th anniversary.  The Washam's are members of Grace Community Church and currently, two of their three boys attend Visalia schools; John is a sophomore and Lucas is a seventh grader. Johanna has been a guest teacher for 9 years and the couple are active in the PTA and PTSA.  Michael is a former Cub Scout leader and youth soccer coach.

I reject a one-size-fits-all approach to education and support options for learning, including charter schools, career and technical education, linked learning academies, home-schooling, online learning and early college high schools.

I believe that the Visalia Board of Education must be responsive and receptive to parents, staff, students and the community at large; encouraging open and effective communication. I will build public understanding, support and participation by visiting our schools and holding regular “office hours” to meet with the community.
